The Group came into being in 1988 at a meeting of some 90 doctors brought together by the radio consultancy, Soundplan Broadcasting Services Ltd (Now Soundplan Communications), the BBC and the then IBA (Independent Broadcasting Authority.) It was to be, and still is, a nonprofit making body to help and support practising clinicians who also broadcast.

Today the ABD has some 680 members, including general practitioners, hospital doctors and consultants covering most specialities.  All are motivated to broadcast and many of them are  very experienced media doctors.

Funding

The Association provides a free media/medical liaison service.  Funding comes from sponsored health education campaigns on radio and television.  Typically, sponsors are pharmaceutical companies, medical charities and sometimes, Government.  We also offer independent advice and assistance to public relations companies running health awareness campaigns.  Click here for more information.
