Dr Rameen Shakur

Described by the Royal Society of Medicine as the most current and up-to-date guide on MMC and foundation years initiatives, A Career in Medicine – Have you got what it takes? by ABD Member, Dr Rameen Shakur outlines the process and decisions required for students seeking to undertake a medical degree. The writer dispels some of the myths about the medical profession and provides indispensable advice to enhance a student's chance of getting into the medical school of his or her choice.

A Career in Medicine also provides an online resource where students and junior doctors can seek advice directly from the expert contributors in the book at www.acareerinmedicine.net

Dr Tom Smith

Dr Tom Smith is a GP and longstanding author.  Based in Scotland he contributes health columns to a number of newspapers, and broadcasts regularly on radio.  Two of his books have received awards from the Association of Medical Journalists.  His latest book, DOCTOR HAVE YOU GOT A MINUTE? is a gem for the serial hypochondriac. In it he sets out to provide the answers to many of the questions that keep patients awake at night, from the trivial to the very serious.

For instance, it will help a midlife male with one testicle lower than the other and explain why women don’t go bald; and help a mother who is not sure if dummies are really bad for babies.  In addition, a must for every surgery waiting room, there is a quiz to find out if you are a dream patient, or a doctor’s nightmare.   Published by Short Books, 10th October 2006 (£9.99 hbk)

Dr Carol Cooper

A prolific writer on child health, Dr Cooper's latest book is Baby Milestones. A key issue for parents is knowing whether their baby’s progress is normal and healthy.  Her new book gives expert advice to inform and reassure parents, and to help them bring out the best in their child.

Organized by age, with helpful progress charts for every stage, this book explains the physical, intellectual and emotional development of a young child from birth to three years.   It addresses common concerns and also covers health and safety matters.

Written by ABD Member, Dr Carol Cooper, an experienced GP and mother of three, this book follows on from the author’s previous best-selling childcare books. Price £15.

OBITUARY: PETER PETTS, ABD DIRECTOR

Peter died at home on September 12th 2002 after a long illness. Born in Gillingham, Kent in 1932, Peter was a Master Mariner, having served the first twelve years of his working life in the Merchant Navy. On leaving the sea, he worked as a journalist for a variety of publications and was for several years editor of The Dock and Harbour Authority. It was at this time he started to broadcast as a freelance for The Merchant Navy Programme on BBC World Service, which led to more general broadcasting opportunities - an occupation that he enjoyed enormously. Later he played a major part in the launch of Doctor and The Medical Technologist, publications, which he edited for several years. Shortly after BBC Local Radio came into being, Peter set up Soundplan Broadcasting Services Ltd, a broadcast training and consultancy company. Peter developed a highly regarded radio interview tape syndication service for local radio which was eventually taken over by UNS Radio Services, of which Peter was managing director for a number of years. Soundplan continued as a broadcasting consultancy and training company. Peter founded The Association of Broadcasting Doctors (ABD) in 1988 with the co-operation of the BBC and the then Independent Broadcasting Association (IBA). Both the ABD and Soundplan will continue to be run by Peter's wife Jackie.
